Located twenty-five kilometres from Cairns city, Kuranda is a small town perched on the Atherton Tableland at the summit of the McAlister Range. The town is surrounded by the World Heritage listed tropical rainforest of Northern Queensland and has grown to become a must-see destination for visitors to Cairns. Because of Kuranda’s stunning location, both the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail Rainforest Cableway provide visitors with breathtaking views of swathes of lush rainforest.
Despite its far-flung location, Kuranda is home to many modern amenities, and visitors will be pleasantly surprised to find a whole host of shops, restaurants and cafes. There are also several markets at which Australian-made crafts and local produce can be purchased.
There is no shortage of sights and activities for nature lovers in Kuranda. At Birdworld, wander through a massive bird aviary, the wings of hundreds of bird species flapping overhead. At the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, get up close and personal with the gentle little butterflies that inhabit the rainforest. At Kuranda Koala Gardens, cuddle a koala, feed a kangaroo and admire crocodiles from a safe distance. Honey House Kuranda gives visitors a chance not only to observe busy bees hard at work, but also to sample and purchase excellent honey fresh off the farm.
If you prefer to experience nature in its raw, unedited glory, embark on one of numerous hiking trails at Barron Gorge National Park, where you can make your way through the rainforest to the Barron Falls, which turns into a mighty deluge during wet season. To learn about aboriginal culture and the role the rainforest plays in the lives of the aborigines, visit the Rainforestation Nature Park, where you can explore the tropical rainforest aboard an amphibious vehicle that takes you through both land sea, as well as observe spear-throwing demonstrations and dance performances by indigenous Australians.
