While waiting for your next tour from Cairns Tours, you can explore the many features and places of interest that the city itself has to offer.

You might like to start by visiting the Cairns Esplanade and Boardwalk. The Esplanade is handy to many shops and restaurants and offers spectacular views of Trinity Inlet and the surrounding mountains. There are twelve free barbecue facilities (cleaned daily) spread out over the length of the esplanade as well as numerous picnic table settings for your convenience. Walkers along the esplanade are likely to see many forms of native birdlife and it is handy to a skate park and tennis courts.

Perhaps the Esplanade’s stand out attraction for families is the renowned Muddy’s playground. This enthralling park features a multitude of fun attractions, including rope bridges, a flying fox, slides, playhouses, storytelling areas and much more. The park is divided into three distinct areas catering for specific age groups. This is one place that you and your family can easily spend a couple of hours at, enjoying the facilities. The playground is open every day of the year between 9.00am and 7.00pm and has café and barbecue facilities for your convenience.

A relatively recent addition to the esplanade area is the Cairns Lagoon. This area located right in the heart of Cairns features a large patrolled swimming area that ranges in depth from a few centimetres to about 1.6 metres (five feet). The crystal clear waters are pumped from Trinity Inlet through a high tech filtration system into the lagoon area. This is a great place to swim or just enjoy the sheer beauty of the place.

If you are looking for something of a more indoor nature, a visit to the Reef Casino will certainly provide you with a variety of entertainment options. The casino is centrally located in Cairns and is easily recognised with its large glass domed roof. As well as offering a range of high quality bars and restaurants, the Reef Casino features the spectacular Rainforest Dome. This spectacular all weather wildlife exhibit is not to be missed. It features one hundred species of wildlife that are able to roam freely beneath a twenty-metre high glass dome on the rooftop of the casino. While you are there be sure to see the saltwater crocodile underwater viewing area – it is the safest way to come face to face with a saltwater crocodile.

Another great attraction is the Flecker Botanic gardens, located in Collins Avenue. These well-established gardens feature the tropical flora that can be found in tropical rain forest regions across the world. You will find a vast majority of tropical plants within the gardens including, palms, bromeliads, ferns and intriguing insect eating plants. Entry is free and this is one easy way to experience the beauty of a tropical rainforest.

There are many other entertaining things to do in Cairns including a visit to the Cairns museum, a visit to the Cairns art gallery or a visit to the Cairns Civic theatre. Regardless of what you choose to do in your down time, Cairns Tours have an amazing range of affordable activities to ensure your visit to this beautiful region is memorable and enjoyable!
