The Delightful Daintree

Queensland’s Far North is ripe with adventure – a place of natural beauty, with abundant flora and fauna across a vast landscape of rainforest, mountains, rivers, deep gorges and swiftly flowing streams. The World Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest is a lush ecosystem covering more than 1200 square kilometres and is home to some of the planet’s oldest living plant life and a wide variety of rare and ancient animals. Named after the 19th century geologist Richard Daintree, this lush area of continuous rainforest is purported to be more than 135 million years old. This tropical wonderland is full of ancient secrets and is home to the Kuku Yalanji people, traditional owners of the land for many thousands of years.

Josephine-Falls-2

Be prepared to encounter the huge Cassowary, the Bennets Tree Kangaroo, the giant Bull Kauri tropical trees, more than 600 vertebrate animals and over 200 species of butterflies. The Wet Tropics are also home to 19 primitive flowering plants, including the humorously named Idiot Fruit, discovered in 1970. Beneath the vast rainforest canopy live an enormous selection of birds, frogs, lizards, possums, snakes and more than 70 animals endemic to North East Queensland. With all of this – set against a coastal backdrop of pristine white beaches and fringing reefs – the Daintree will leave you breathless with its beauty.

Cairns Tours offer two fabulous adventures to the Daintree that are well worth investigating. ‘Daintree Walkabout’ will see you enjoying an enchanting Dreamtime Walk at Mossman Gorge with the Kuku Yalanji.
